Why does eating sugary food result in weight gain?

We all love eating donuts, cakes, chocolates, cookies. Having more sugar in drinks always gives our taste buds pleasure. Sugar has been so tempting since centuries but eating them on a regular basis can help make you overweight. However, the consumption of sugar, more than prescribed quantity, each day can skyrocket the number of calories in the body. Don't believe it? Try to notice your weight daily for a week. You will get a shock when you see the difference between your weight. Now you might be thinking, "Why does my weight increase when I consume sugar in my diet? What does it have in it that makes me fat?"

The reason you gain weight after having a sugary diet lies in the nature of sugar. Sugar intervenes with the natural functioning of the body. Consumption of sugar in limited quantities doesn't have much impact. However, eating in higher amounts do have a significant effect on the critical functioning of the body. It results in an imbalance of hormones - the levels of glucose increase in the bloodstream. As a result, the pancreas gets signals of releasing more insulin in the blood. If the secretion of insulin increases, the body starts storing food calories as fat. This results in abrupt weight gain.

One more critical issue of higher levels of insulin secretion in the body is leptin resistance. Leptin is a hormone which tells the brain when we are full and can stop eating. This hormone acts as a natural appetite suppressant. However, due to high levels of sugar, insulin, and leptin resistance, the brain doesn't get signal of being full and hence, we overeat. This results in sluggishness. It will be challenging for a person to stay active, which further contributes to obesity and weight gain. To maintain the best balance nutritionally it is recommended that the calories from sugar should make up less than 10 percent of your daily calories., but as a rule of thumb the less you eat the better.
